AI vs. SI in 2026: A Brand Communication Guide After the Federal Terminology Shift

How marketing, creative and product teams can talk about AI and “Super Intelligence” accurately without turning a U.S. policy label into an unsupported product claim.

The newest terminology around “Super Intelligence” creates a communication challenge for brands: a phrase can be official in one policy context while still meaning something different in research, product marketing and public conversation. The September 2026 White House order makes SI the preferred term for the U.S. executive branch in non-statutory communications, but it does not require private companies to rename every AI product or service.

That distinction matters because “superintelligence” has long been used in technical and safety discussions to describe systems that exceed human capability across important domains. If a brand applies “SI” to an ordinary chatbot, recommendation system or image generator only because the government changed its own terminology, audiences may reasonably interpret the label as a claim about capability rather than a reference to federal wording.

A better approach is to label the context. Policy content can say “the U.S. executive branch now uses Super Intelligence / SI in place of AI under the September 29, 2026 executive order.” Product content can continue to describe the real system: generative AI, machine learning, AI assistant, frontier model, automation or another accurate term. If a company adopts SI for stylistic reasons, it should explain what it means rather than implying a technical threshold that has not been demonstrated.

For creative and marketing teams, this is also an SEO issue. Search behavior will not change overnight. People still search for AI production, AI image generation, AI websites and AI tools. Replacing every established keyword with SI could reduce clarity and discoverability while the market is still using multiple terms.

05

The strongest brand language stays evidence-led. Use SI when discussing the new federal terminology or genuinely advanced capabilities. Use AI when that is still the clearest description. The goal is not to chase a label; it is to make the audience understand what the technology actually does.
